Defender Film Room

A working library of defending video for the whole back line, sorted into the same seventeen modules as the training checklist. Reels are quick — watch one on the sideline and coach it immediately. Sit-downs are the long ones, for a classroom session or homework. Tick a box when you’ve used it; the page remembers.

03

Tackling

25 videos

Block, poke, shoulder and slide — in that order of preference. Includes the ‘when NOT to tackle’ material, which matters more than the technique.

Pressure, Cover & Balance

18 videos

First, second and third defender. The roles rotate every time the ball moves, so train the transition between them, not the static picture.

Pressing & the Block

06

Line Management & Compactness

23 videos

Step, drop, slide and hold. The offside trap, the high line, and closing the gap to the midfield. Walk it with no ball before you add one.

Aerial Duels & Defensive Heading

Full Back & Wing Back Play

50 videos

The wide 1v1, tucking in on the far side, recovery runs — and the whole attacking half of the job: overlaps, underlaps, inverted roles, crossing.

Building Out & On the Ball

52 videos

Scanning, open body shape, first touch out of the feet, breaking lines and switching play. What separates a defender from a footballer who defends.

Transition, Recovery & Rest Defence

The five seconds after losing it. Counter-pressing, recovery runs, defending outnumbered, and the shape you hold while attacking.

Set Pieces

24 videos

Defending corners and walls — plus the attacking side, because your centre backs are the biggest players on the field and this is where they score.

Communication & Leadership

10 videos

Organising the line, captaincy, and the shared command vocabulary. Note the keeper videos here — the two organisers have to agree before kickoff.

Physical, Mentality & Common Mistakes

25 videos

Speed, deceleration, duels, concentration, and a hard look at the errors defenders actually make. Good homework material.

54 videos

Van Dijk, Maldini, Saliba, Dias, Trent, Hakimi, Ramos, Puyol. Watch the habit, not the highlight — the best defending is a step taken two seconds early.

How this list was built, honestly. These came from a broad search sweep, then were curated by topic, source and how instructional the video looks — not by watching all of them end to end. Treat it as a stocked shelf, not a graded reading list: skim two or three in a module, keep the ones that teach the way you coach, and ignore the rest. One honest gap — defender-specific communication is a thin niche on YouTube, so Module 14 leans on goalkeeper-communication and back-four organisation videos. YouTube links do rot, so if one is dead, the module heading is your search term.
