The gold standard on the girls side — and a top boys league whose Michigan lane looks different.
The Elite Clubs National League runs national top-tier competitions for both girls and boys, admitting whole clubs that must field every age group U13–U19. Michigan is a genuine ECNL state on the girls side, with Michigan Hawks (and Hawks Magic), Nationals SC, Liverpool FC IA Michigan and Midwest United FC all holding ECNL Girls membership. Nationals SC is the most recent addition, accepted for 2024-25 after years as a Girls Academy power. Liverpool FC IA Michigan carries Vardar's girls program, which merged its U13–U19 teams into Liverpool. On the boys side there is one: Nationals SC, whose ECNL Boys academy runs out of the Oakland County program most people call Oakland Nationals. It sent four teams to the ECNL Boys National Playoffs in 2024. Every other Michigan club advertising 'ECNL' for its boys is in the Regional League's Greater Michigan Alliance — a separate competition — so ask which one a club means. ECNL explicitly schedules around high school soccer.
Allowed and planned for — calendars are built around the relevant MHSAA season, and most elite Michigan girls play both.
The parent takeaway
For girls: this is a real Michigan lane with several member clubs, and college recruiters treat ECNL and GA showcases with equal seriousness — pick the better local club and coach, not the patch. For boys: Nationals SC is the only Michigan club in full ECNL Boys, so when any other club mentions ECNL for its boys teams, ask whether it means the ECNL Regional League. Both are real, they are not the same competition, and clubs are not always precise about which one a given age group plays in.
