Same platform, second tier — and the one where high school soccer is allowed.
The Academy Division launched in the 2025-26 season as MLS NEXT's second tier. It is the same MLS NEXT platform, branding and pathway as the Homegrown Division, but the regular season is regionally focused and deliberately built around high school calendars. Clubs and parents often call it 'MLS NEXT 2' or 'Tier 2' — those are nicknames, not the official name. The single biggest practical difference from the Homegrown Division: Academy Division players are permitted to play high school soccer.
Allowed. This is the headline difference — MLS NEXT states Academy Division players are permitted to participate in high school soccer, and the regular season is built around high school calendars. In the Homegrown Division high school play requires a waiver and is often declined.
The parent takeaway
Division placement is set team by team each season, so ask your club which division a specific age group plays in — several Michigan clubs, including Vardar, Michigan Wolves, Michigan Jaguars, Midwest United and Michigan Futbol Academy, field teams in both divisions. This is the honest middle path for a strong boys player who is not giving up high school soccer. You get the MLS NEXT platform, pathway and showcase access with a regional schedule and a lower travel bill. If your son's goal is the MLS academy-to-pro route, the Homegrown Division is still the division scouts prioritize.
